Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

A Medicare Supplement policy is sold by private insurance companies and is designed to fill in the cost gaps left by Original Medicare. Because Medigap plans are standardized, the same Plan G from any carrier provides the same benefits — so price and company stability are what to compare.

  • Covers Part A & B copays, coinsurance, and deductibles
  • Use any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare — nationwide
  • Standardized plans (A, B, D, G, K, L, M, N) make comparison clear
  • Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay your premium
  • Best value when enrolled during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Part D Prescription Drug Plans

Medicare Part D is standalone prescription drug coverage offered by private insurers that contract with Medicare. It works alongside Original Medicare and most Medigap policies to reduce what you pay at the pharmacy each month.

  • Covers brand-name and generic prescription drugs
  • Each plan has its own formulary (drug list), premiums, and pharmacy network
  • Enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), or a Special Enrollment Period (SEP)
  • Extra Help (Low-Income Subsidy) may be available to reduce your costs further
  • Late enrollment penalty applies if you delay without creditable coverage

Understanding Original Medicare

Before adding supplemental coverage, it helps to understand exactly what Original Medicare covers — and where the out-of-pocket exposure lies. Without a supplement, there is no annual cap on what you could owe.

  • Part A — Hospital insurance: inpatient stays, skilled nursing, hospice, home health
  • Part B — Medical insurance: doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment
  • 80% coverage after deductible for most Part B services — you pay the remaining 20%
  • No out-of-pocket maximum under Original Medicare alone
  • Part D (drug coverage) must be added separately

65 The Age Your Best Enrollment Window Opens
When to Enroll

Common Times to
Enroll or Review Coverage

Timing matters significantly with Medicare. Enrolling at the right moment can protect you from penalties and guarantee your coverage options.

🎂

Turning 65

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) runs for 7 months — starting 3 months before your 65th birthday month, including that month, and continuing 3 months after. Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period begins when you're enrolled in Part B at 65.

💼

Losing Employer or Union Coverage

A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) allows you to sign up for Medicare — and often for supplemental coverage — without incurring a late enrollment penalty when you lose job-based insurance.

📅

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

October 15 – December 7 each year. This is the primary window to review, switch, or enroll in a Medicare Part D plan. Changes take effect January 1 of the following year.

📍

Moving to a New Area

Relocating to a new zip code or county may affect your Part D plan's pharmacy network and formulary. This often qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period to make changes.

Under 65 with a Qualifying Disability

If you have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months, you automatically become eligible for Medicare — regardless of age. In some states, Medigap coverage may also be available to you.

Am I Eligible?

Find Out What Coverage Is Available to You.

If you are currently enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B, you are eligible to apply for a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy and add a standalone Part D plan. A licensed agent can review your specific situation at no cost.

Open Enrollment Reminder: The best time to purchase a Medigap policy is during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the window that begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Part B. During this period, insurers cannot deny coverage or charge more due to pre-existing health conditions.
